The alpine is a
medium to large Swiss breed of goat that was first imported into
California in 1922. They have excellent production and long
lactations which hold up well in hot weather. They are hardy and
adaptable and thrive in any climate. The Alpine is second in
popularity to the Nubian in Canada and the U.S. It is very strong
genetically. The Alpine is actually made up of several varieties:
British, Oberhasli and Rock Alpines. The Oberhasli , once called the
Swiss Alpine, has been granted a herd book in the U.S. and is quickly
gaining popularity as a breed.
