The
Nubian
Is a breed of goat developed in England by crossing native British goats with the Jumna Pari goat of India and the Zariby goat of Egypt. This goat was developed as a dual purpose animal, producing both milk and meat. Because of its origin, this goat is particularly heat-tolerant and being used extensively for up-grading native goats in tropical countries.
It produces a reasonable quantity of milk, though not as much as the three Swiss breeds. However, that milk usually contains a higher percentage of butterfat and higher solids-not-fat. In severe cold ,the long pendulous ears often get frost-bitten, sometimes the tips freeze completely and drop off. The Nubian is a very vocal goat with a loud insistant bleat. Nubians have a tendency towards multiple, births, triplets and quadruplets are common and quintuplets not all that rare. Nubians also, because of their heat tolerance, tend to be more reliable for out-of-season breeding for a good supply of winter milk. Nubian kids are preferred by buyers who purchase for meat because they have a meatier carcass .
Breed characteristics include a strongly convex or "ROMAN" nose . The ears are pendulous, extending past the muzzle when held flat along the sides of the face. The ears should lie close to the head at the temple and flare slightly out and forward at the rounded tip, forming a "bell shape". The Nubian has a short , fine and glossy coat and any color or combination of colors is acceptable.
